A World Without Cancer with Margaret Cuomo

The making of a new cure and the real promise of prevention

Airing nationally in November, 2016

Every day this year, there will be 4,600 new cases of cancer reported.

In A World Without Cancer, Dr. Cuomo shows us the 10 actionable lifestyle changes that we can do every day to lower the risk of cancer, and other life threatening diseases, while improving quality of life. She shows us how small and simple changes can have an immense impact in cancer prevention. Experts like PBS Documentarian Ken Burns and singer/song writer Valerie Simpson discuss firsthand how cancer has impacted their lives.

Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo

Margaret-Cuomo.jpgMargaret I. Cuomo, M.D. is a board certified radiologist, teaching professional, and national advocate for the prevention of cancer, heart disease and diabetes. She graduated summa cum laude from St. John’s University and received an M.D. degree from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. She served as an attending physician in diagnostic radiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, specializing in diagnostic radiology, and dedicating much of her time and energy to the diagnosis of cancer and AIDS, using state-of-the art CT scans, ultrasound examinations, and MRI. Dr. Cuomo also provided academic instruction to medical students at New York University Hospital and Cornell University Medical College, and has published numerous articles in medical journals. She is a contributor and member of the Medical Review Board of The Huffington Post, is a regular contributor to WebMD, and has been featured in many TV interviews, magazines and newspapers.

The Cuomo family’s commitment to public service is evident. Dr. Cuomo’s father is former New York State Governor Mario Cuomo, and her brother is the current New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo. In addition, her mother, Matilda Raffa Cuomo, is the founder of the New York State Mentoring Program, and her brother is CNN anchor Chris Cuomo. Dr. Cuomo is married to Howard Maier, who served as Chairman of the Long Island Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center of Nassau County for nine years.

In addition to her work as a physician and public health advocate, Dr. Cuomo is also active in the educational promotion of the Italian language, serving as co-founder and president of the Italian Language Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting Italian language education in the United States.

Dr. Cuomo’s affiliations include the American Association of Women Radiologists, American College of Radiology, Long Island Radiological Society, Nassau County Medical Society, New York State Radiological Society, New York State Medical Society, and Radiological Society of North America. She is an Honoree of Association of Italian American Educators (2003, 2005), and an Honoree of National Organization of Italian American Women (2004). In 2011, Dr. Cuomo was awarded the “Commendatore dell’Ordine della Stella della Solidarieta Italiana” (2011), the “Commendation of the Order of the Star” conferred by the President and Prime Minister of Italy.
