‘The Talk - Race in America’ TONIGHT at 9:00 P.M. ET on Detroit Public Television

Last Updated by Lea Vigi on

In the wake of recent tragic and fatal events between men of color and law enforcement, The Talk—Race in America explores how black and Hispanic families counsel their kids to stay safe if they are stopped by the police.

The film will present six personal stories to illustrate the issue from multiple points of view: parent, child, the police and the community. Filmed across the country, in communities including Long Beach, California; Oakland, California; St. Louis, Missouri; Richland County, South Carolina; Memphis, Tennessee; and Cleveland, Ohio, the stories will include interviews with academics, police force members, community activists and family members.

Here in Detroit, American Black Journal host and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Stephen Henderson recently teamed up with Detroit Public Television's (DPTV) One Detroit initiative to explore racial attitudes in Detroit and outward with an esteemed panel of thoughtful advocates and community leaders. In the special, hosted at Detroit-based Focus: HOPE, Stephen and the panel discussed past tragedies in St. Paul, Baton Rouge, and Dallas and explored hot button topics like white privilege, police and community relations, and systemic issues exacerbated by the racial attitudes we all carry but may not readily recognize. Stephen also revealed results from a Knight Foundation funded survey about race relations in Michigan.

Viewers can watch Stephen’s conversation at http://bit.ly/2ajegkm and can tune-in to The Talk – Race in America tonight at 9:00 P.M. ET. To learn more about The Talk, visit http://to.pbs.org/2kQXs5B.
