May 14, 2015: Senator Charged / Transit Plan / Summer Sessions / New Deadlines

State Senator Virgil Smith faces felony charges following a shooting incident at his Detroit home involving his ex-wife. He's been removed from Senate committees and caucus duties. But is that enough? The MiWeek team discusses the limited options in the State Constitution for removing legislators.
The Regional Transit Authority kicked off its master planning process this week with a rally at Campus Martius. Next week, the RTA will begin meeting with residents in the four counties that will be linked through the regional transportation service, to see what they envision for the system. The MiWeek team offers their ideas.
And "school" won't be out for the State Senate for the entire summer. They say there's too much work to do, including coming up with a road- funding plan in light of Proposal 1's failure.
Plus, deadlines have been extended for delinquent Wayne County property taxpayers and Detroit water customers to allow more residents to get on payment plans. The MiWeek team looks at whether this is the best way to deal with the issues and hardships of the residents.
