Detroit Public TV Receives $150,000 Challenge Grant from

Newman’s Own Foundation

Funding will challenge viewers to become donors, increase support

DETROIT (March 8, 2013) – Detroit Public Television (DPTV) has been awarded a $150,000 challenge grant over two years from Newman’s Own Foundation, the independent foundation created by the late actor and philanthropist, Paul Newman. The award to DPTV reflects the ongoing commitment of Newman’s Own Foundation to support open dialogue and promote civic engagement.

DPTV will use the challenge to offer its viewers multiple ways to support – or increase the support – that helps fund the operation of Michigan’s most-watched public television station. The first opportunities will be pledge-night challenges on March 21 and 22. The grant will also be directed toward encouraging support of WRCJ 90.9 FM in its April pledge drive.

“It is a powerful incentive for viewers to know that if they make contributions at certain times and of certain amounts, Newman’s Own Foundation will double those dollars for DPTV and WRCJ to produce and broadcast quality programming,” said DPTV President Rich Homberg.

“Paul Newman believed that the independent voice played a critical role in making our world a better place,” said Robert Forrester, President of Newman’s Own Foundation. “He was a strong supporter of public broadcasting, and we are proud to maintain that support through our funding of Detroit Public Television.”

Paul Newman established the Foundation in 2005, as a means of continuing his pledge to donate to charity all profits from the sale of products from Newman’s Own, Inc. Since the food company’s founding in 1982, Newman and Newman’s Own Foundation have donated more than $370 million to thousands of charities worldwide.
