WTVS Detroit Public Television Named ‘Public Television Station of the Year’

 

DETROIT (March 10, 2017) – In a ceremony held March 8, 2017, in Lansing, Michigan, The Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB) and MAB Foundation (MABF) awarded its 2016 Broadcast Excellence Award (BEA) for “Public Television Station of the Year” to WTVS Detroit Public Television (DPTV).  The Station was recognized for its outstanding locally produced programs as well as its promotion and community engagement activities. 

“This is a testament to the hard work of our staff and the support of our many community partners,” said Detroit Public TV President and CEO Rich Homberg. “We thank our colleagues and look forward to connecting our audiences with meaningful entertainment and information that reflects life in Michigan.”

In addition to the “Station of the Year” honors, DPTV received winning awards for these entries:

  • Community Involvement – Digital Adventure
    DPTV’s multi-media campaign to extend learning opportunities for young people.
  • Sports, Outdoor or Recreational – Learning in the Wild
    A Michigan summer camp that introduces kids to the importance of enjoying and protecting our natural resources.
  • Cultural Programming – Detroit Performs series
    DPTV’s weekly series encouraging participation in the arts.
  • Documentary – When I’m 65
    Explores the changing social and economic factors affecting retirement.
  • Marketing Materials & promos – One Detroit
    DPTV’s ongoing journalism commitment to “Tell Detroit’s Story.”
  • Special Interest Programming – Detroit Remember When: J.P. McCarthy, The Voice of Detroit
    A documentary recalling the beloved Detroit broadcaster.
  • Cultural & Performing Arts – Il Volo: Una Notte Magica
    DPTV traveled to Italy to capture a concert with the young tenors and opera legend Placido Domingo.
  • News or Public Affairs Programming – Beyond the Tap
    A documentary examining the challenges posed by America’s aging infrastructure.
  • News or Public Affairs Programming – American Black Journal
    A weekly series of conversations with newsmakers and celebrities.

Through its work with One Detroit—DPTV’s initiative to tell Detroit’s stories and engage the community, as well as ongoing on-the-ground efforts to provide kids, parents and educators with the resources they need to grow as learners and professionals including the launch of the 24/7 Detroit PBS KIDS Channel, as well as the Station’s commitment to covering the important issues affecting the Great Lakes through its Great Lakes Bureau, DPTV continues to collaborate with partners to ensure that the stories we tell are impactful, trusted, and engaging.
