Detroit Public TV Receives $25,000 Grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for ‘Veterans Coming Home’ project
DETROIT (May 13, 2014) – What awaits veterans when they return home? Opportunities or Challenges? To help shed the light on this issue and provide veterans with the assistance and resources to transition into civilian life, Detroit Public Television (DPTV) has received a $25,000 grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to expand its veterans-related programming and resources.
The grant is part of PBS and CPB’s new veterans’ initiative that features national content rolling out over several years, and local community engagement efforts to increase dialogue and solutions as veterans return home. The initiative includes national, multi-platform content on PBS under the banner of Stories of Service, and a community engagement campaign funded by CPB called Veterans Coming Home.
Under the terms of the grant, DPTV will work with Wisconsin Public Television on the Veterans Coming Home project, which is designed to communicate veterans’ stories, convene local events that recognize veterans for their service, and collaborate with local partners to connect local veterans with needed support and information. This is in addition to creating a local web portal designed to connect local veterans and veterans’ families with available statewide resources.
"For more than two years, Detroit Public Television has been connecting with veterans stories in Michigan," said Georgeann Herbert, Senior Vice President for Content and Community Engagement. "DPTV will use this grant to expand relationships with veterans service organizations and to share Michigan’s opportunities for veterans with our public media colleagues statewide."
DPTV already provides "A Salute to Veterans," www.dptv.org/vets, a website dedicated to local and national veterans-related programming, as well as local coverage of important conferences and events, such as the 2013 Governor’s Summit on Veterans Talent, and a comprehensive list of resources and information.
