Detroit Public Television Launches

'Be Summer Smart' Campaign

Be Summer Smart DETROIT (May 13, 2014) – The lazy days of summer can conjure images of fun and relaxation, yet at the same time, according to recent studies, it can also mean a loss of more than two months of learning. Detroit Public Television (DPTV) and WRCJ 90.9 FM are launching a 60-day campaign to help reverse this trend. With on-air messaging, events, hundreds of online materials, and a directory of learning opportunities, children can stay enriched and engaged over the summer.

The campaign will kick off this Saturday, May 17, 2014, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with the third annual 'Kickstart Your Summer' event sponsored by WRCJ 90.9 FM in partnership with the Detroit Public Schools Foundation and the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. This free, fun-filled event for the entire family will feature continuous live entertainment, a Kids' Fun Room, including an instrument "petting zoo" and other kids' activities, as well as more than 30 exhibitors from various Southeast Michigan arts and educational organizations.

'Be Summer Smart' will continue with the return of DPTV's popular Kids Club Live on June 24 and 25, 2014 at the Royal Oak Farmers Market, 316 E 11 Mile Rd in Royal Oak, featuring some favorite  PBS friends, arts and crafts, games, sing along, activity area, Be on TV, Raising Readers Read-Aloud Tent, more. Tickets are just $10; kids 12 months and younger are free.

In addition to these events, parents and educators will find thousands of online resources, fun activities, and learning tools on PBS Learning Media and PBS Parents. Both can be accessed by visiting the Be Summer Smart webpage, www.dptv.org/education/be-summer-smart

"Bringing people together around important issues is what Public Media does best," said Detroit Public TV President and CEO Rich Homberg. "We're proud to be able to provide so many resources to help parents and kids discover ways to enrich their learning experiences this summer."
